Beryl / Senior Section

The Senior Section is open to girls and young women aged 14–26.

In this section of Guiding, women participate in a fun and flexible programme known as Look Wider. The programme is linked to a variety of recognised qualifications or awards, both within and outside Guiding. The opportunities and challenges offered by the Senior Section can be followed by a group or by individual members, or by women not attached to a Unit (sometimes known as ‘Lones’). They are designed to be particularly beneficial to girls getting ready to embark on a career or go to university.

The Senior Section 'Look Wider' Programme is based around eight programme areas known as Octants:

  • Creativity
  • Fit for Life
  • Community
  • Action
  • Out-of-doors
  • International
  • Independent Living
  • Personal Values
  • Leadership.

Senior Section members may also train to be Young Leaders by helping out with Rainbows and Brownies, with support from an adult Leader.

There are several international opportunities available for Senior Section members, ranging from attending events abroad to volunteering on community projects in developing countries. Members can also make their voices heard by joining the Guiding delegate of the British Youth Council or Innovate, a national forum for young women to discuss and contribute to the direction of Girlguiding UK.
